Dental care, Do you have to have an oral surgeon to pull out teeth

Sunday, Sep. 12th 2010 6:30 AM

I have dental insurance but it does not cover for me to go to any specialist.  However I have two really bad teeth that I just want pulled out.  I already had root canals in these teeth and they do not take. Do I have to go to an oral surgeon to have the teeth pulled?  Can I just have a general dentist pull them so that I will be covered under my dental plan?

  1. Greg Hills Says:

Since there is no way for anyone to tell you want your dental insurance plan will and will not cover. What you want to do to confirm is to call your dental insurance company.

Most dental insurance plans will cover to the policy terms for extractions. But check with your plan. Then the dentist you are going to would also want to pull the teeth. Most dentist will advise against pulling teeth if they are savable.

I get where you are coming from but my question would be are you just going to have the teeth pulled and then do nothing in replacing them?

Would you really want to have such large gaps? The issue is they when a dentist pull teeth they normally will put in a bridge or partial. If that the case for you then make sure your current plan would cover for such dental services.

Just know all your choices, see what makes sense for you cost wise. But also know about any long term effects on your oral and teeth health for whichever way you want to address your current dental needs.
