Many people want brighter, whiter smiles, but they may not understand the limitations or risks of the treatment. Before having your teeth whitened either with an at-home kit or by a dentist, ask your dentist for a teeth whitening brochure. Many dental offices will be able to provide pamphlets on teeth whitening that explains the difference between at-home and in-office whitening. They will typically provide details on various products’ active ingredients and relative strengths. The brochure will discuss possible side effects and cases when bleaching is not advisable and show before and after photos of teeth whiting services.

Dental Benefit – Veneers

09/01/23

Dental Veneers are only sometimes the best option.

Many makeovers TV shows made people aware of the dramatic changes that veneers can make on a person’s smile. Makeover shows commonly use porcelain veneers or laminates for quick results that the show may be wanting. However, depending on the dental issue, there may be better choices than veneers. Such as, if teeth are not straight, orthodontics is usually the preferred choice because they do not require irreversibly changing the tooth structure. Also, there may be better choices than veneers for someone who clenches or grinds his teeth, as this will cause premature failure of the veneer. Stay informed of all your options in dental correction. Speak to a Cosmetic dentist and decide what is the best option for you

Dental Benefit – Using a Straw

08/25/23

Using a straw is better for your teeth.

If you have ever had your teeth whitened, you may know the trick about drinking stain-able drinks such as coffee through a straw to maintain your newly whitened teeth. However, drinking sodas, sports/energy drinks, and juices through a straw is also a good idea to help protect your tooth enamel. Many of those drinks contain acids, such as citric and phosphoric, that can erode dental enamel, even if they are diet or sugar-free. Using a straw, you can position it toward the back of your mouth, limiting the contact the drinks have with your teeth. Helping to preserve the tooth enamel.

Dental Benefit – Mercury Filling

08/21/23

Mercury in dental fillings is not risky as once thought.

The FDA concludes mercury in dental fillings is not risky. The government declared that silver dental fillings contain too little mercury to harm the millions who’ve had cavities filled with them. This includes young children, and only people allergic to mercury need to avoid them, which was something of an about-face for the FDA. Last year settled, a lawsuit with anti-mercury activists by posting on its Web site a precaution saying questions remained about whether the small amount of mercury vapor the fillings can release is enough to harm the developing brains of fetuses or the very young. FDA said its final scientific review ended that concern. Still, the agency slightly strengthened how it regulates the fillings, urging dentists to provide their patients with a government-written statement detailing the mercury controversy and what science shows.

Dental Benefit – Stress

08/19/23

Stress Taking it’s a Toll on Your Teeth.

Stress has become a factor for many American as economic pressure takes its toll. It is not surprising that fewer people are going to the dentist for a whiter smile since whiting treatments are usually not covered under dental insurance. The cost is too high to spend on extras. However, dentists see an incline in the number of people grinding their teeth due to stress. More people are becoming so anxious and stressed over the economy and their financial futures that they are taking it out on their teeth. While some experts believe that genetics may play a role in teeth grinding, stress has long been known to set off clenching and grinding in some people. Since grinding teeth can wear down tooth enamel and crack or break teeth, it is essential to treat and protect your teeth from grinding. Night guards can be helpful for people that grind their teeth while they sleep. However, talk to your dentist about stress and how it can affect your teeth.

Can biting my nails damage my teeth? – Dental Benefit

07/15/23

While your fingernails may look clean, they can harbor dangerous bacteria such as E. coli and salmonella. Nail-biting and infection can go hand-in-hand because you transmit these bacteria from the fingers to the mouth and gut, where they can cause severe gastrointestinal disorders.

Habitual nail biters can also develop paronychia, a nasty infection of the fingertips that leads to redness, swelling, and pus and requires surgically draining from the nail bed.

In addition: According to the American Dental Association, nail biting can chip or crack teeth. They can also increase the risk of root resorption and tooth loss for people who have braces.

Also, nail biters are more likely to develop bruxism, the unintentional act of grinding the teeth, which can cause headaches, facial pain, recessed gums, tooth sensitivity, and even tooth loss.
