Houston dentist, Dr. Behzad Nazari, has highlighted a recent study showing increased risk of kidney disease in patients suffering from periodontal disease. According to the study, which was performed at the University of California, San Francisco, patients suffering from periodontal disease had a much higher risk of chronic kidney disease compared to individuals with healthy gums. A variety of risk factors can increase the likelihood of gum disease, including heredity, sugar consumption, and smoking. By maintaining healthy gums, patients may reduce their risks of developing kidney problems in the future.

Oral cancer, includes cancer of the mouth, throat, salivary glands, tongue or lip. In the early stages, oral and throat cancers can have symptoms similar to a toothache or they are painless. Many cases of oral cancer are seriously advanced by the time they are detected. That is why it is important to examine your mouth periodically.
If oral cancer is identified early, it is almost always treatable. Bad breath is an early sign of oral cancer. Other early signs of oral cancer include lumps or white, red or dark patches inside the mouth, difficulty chewing, swallowing or moving the jaw, feeling that something is stuck in the throat, numbness in the mouth, thickening of the cheeks, or voice changes.

* Jaw surgery (orthognatic surgery): Jaw surgery may be needed for those with severe structural abnormalities that are causing or contributing to their gummy smiles.
* Lip lowering: Lip lowering is a conservative alternative to more invasive orthognathic surgery and involves adjusting the position of the lip to expose less gum tissue. Botox can also be used to relax the lip muscles and may be used in conjunction with and after lip lowering surgery.

Part of the reason for tooth discoloration is a lifetime of exposure to foods and drinks that can stain the teeth. Another problem is that there may be changes to the inner tissue of the tooth that can lead to discoloration.
Dental Benefit, Seniors and Teeth Hypersensitivity
Sunday, May. 24th 2015 9:34 AM
Often times seniors have hypersensitivity of their teeth. A common factor of hypersensitivity of teeth, is wear and tear on the teeth. The outer protective coating (enamel) of the tooth gradually erodes exposing the inner dentine to the environment. This inner tissue is very sensitive. The erosion does not expose the entire tooth but creates small channels through which hot and cold beverages and even cold air can reach the inner tissue and cause pain . The role of acid reflux is another contributing to hypersensitivity as it erodes the enamel as well.
