Dr Gregory F Bell, DDS on how Bright Smiles Can Hide Underlying Periodontal Disease

Sunday, Sep. 8th 2013 8:10 AM

Many people in today’s culture  associates straight, white teeth to having good dental health.  However, according to dental professional such as  Dr. Gregory F. Bell DDS this trend of thought is a connotation that can be somewhat misleading.   An article posted by HealthNewsDigest.com explains that periodontal disease, or gum disease, can lurk beneath a seemingly healthy smile.  The article describes periodontal disease as being “a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gum tissue and bone supporting the teeth.” As such, it can cause a great deal of damage if left untreated.

According to the article, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, performed a study that revealed that approximately half of Americans who are 30 years of age and older have periodontal disease. Nancy L. Newhouse, DDS, MS, and President of the American Academy of Periodontology, explains that this form of disease can often go overlooked.

Dental Benefit on after buying a dental insurance plan.

Friday, Sep. 6th 2013 11:08 AM

After you buy  the dental insurance plan of your choice, the best advise is to use it.  However here are some tips that you may want to make note of.

1) Know where you got your dental insurance.  With many of dental insurance plans being sold on line it is important to remmember where you bough your dental insurance plan.

2) Know the contact number of the agent/website that you bough your dental plan though. In many cases if you have questions about your dental insurance plan you need to be able to contact the place you bought the plan from.

3) If you receive dental benefits though your employer, make sure to know the member service number for your dental insurance plan.  If you do not have that talk to the person that handles you employee benefits to get it.

Having the correct member service numbers for your dental insurance plan from the start will make things easier for you when and if you ever need to call about your dental insurance plan. So make sure you put this information somewhere you can easily access it.

Severe Gum Disease Linked To Oral Cancer Virus.

Monday, Sep. 2nd 2013 10:48 AM

The British Dental Health Foundation is looking to educate the public on good oral health after scientists discovered severe gum disease could be linked to an increased risk of head and neck cancer cases caused by the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV).  The study1 found patients with HPV-positive tumours had significantly higher bone loss, a key factor in the development of severe gum disease, compared with patients with HPV-negative tumours.

Latest figures suggest more than 6,000 people in the UK suffer from oral cancer2, while almost 2,000 lives are lost to the disease. HPV is a growing cause of the disease, with experts suggesting it may rival tobacco use as the main cause of oral cancer within 10 years. Other risk factors for developing the disease include tobacco use, drinking to excess and poor diet.  The significance of the research is compounded by the fact more teeth are lost through periodontal (gum) disease than through tooth decay.

Poor Oral Health is Damaging UK Economy

Wednesday, Aug. 28th 2013 10:29 AM

In the UK over 2 million people stated they had to take time off of work due to poor oral health. The UK’s economy is being damaged unnecessarily with an estimated two million workers taking sick time off work due to poor oral health over the past five years.

Most problems with teeth and gums are preventable with a good oral health routine, but around seven per cent of the UK’s 29 million workforce have called in sick with teeth problems at least once in the past five years. The sickness figure is likely to be even higher as many people are still unaware that poor oral health can put them at greater risk of acute health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and strokes.

Thinking about your dental needs before buying dental insurance

Saturday, Aug. 24th 2013 9:38 AM

Many people do not buy dental insurance until they have larger dental needs that need to be address right away.  It is not a good idea to put off buying dental insurance until a larger dental need arises.  However, since many people do it is important that you understand your current dental needs, in order to best buy a plan that will fit your dental care needs.

By putting off buying a dental insurance plan you may have to give up a few things in order to receive the dental treatment that is needed.

To give you an example of this:  Say you have a dentist you would like to go to, however that dentist only accepts PPO dental insurance plans. Now your problem is that since you do not have a current dental PPO plan in force, you may have to change dental providers in order to get the needed dental care treatment.  Reason for this: Many PPO plans come with long term waiting periods that will effect the benefits received and what is and what is not covered at the effective date of the plan.

Lets say you do not want to change dental providers, then you are either having to pay the total out of pocket cost for your dental care or wait until the plan waiting periods are up.  If choosing to delay dental care treatment talk to your dentist and make sure that is a good idea.  Many times it is not sound advise to defer dental care when needed since it only helps to creates larger dental care needs.

Yet this can be avoided by buying dental insurance before larger dental care issues are needed.  In fact by having dental insurance in force you are more likely to see the dentist for regular dental checkups and cleaning thus preventing the need for larger dental care issues.

Dental Benefits Regarding Dental Specialist.

Tuesday, Aug. 20th 2013 9:11 AM

When shopping for dental insurance it is important to understand the benefits that are available for any specialist.  Plans such as HMO plans will normally provide around 20 – 30 percent saving off of their plan specialist after having a referral from the general dentist you are assigned to.

Under PPO plans their coverages are normally based off of percentage covered up to UCR based on general dentist cost.  This important to understand because you have a greater likelihood of having UCR fees when going to a specialist.
