Understanding Your Dental Insurance Coverages

Saturday, Jan. 14th 2017 6:33 AM

Before buying a dental insurance plan you should read though the plans terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions.  Having a full understanding of what the  dental insurance plan has to offer you.  Make sure that the dental insurance plan benefits will best fit your dental care needs.

If there is a limitations or exclusions that you do not fully understand, then call member services for an explanation of benefits. It is not a good idea to buy a dental insurance plan for say a crown, only to find out when you go to use it, the plan dose not cover that type of dental service for a year or more. Yet that is a common limitation in many PPO’s.

Read carefully and ask questions if the dental insurance plan benefits are not clear to you.  There are many good dental insurance plans out there that will help you to reduce your dental care cost and maintain your dental health. However there is no one plan fits all.

Dental Benefit, Need Low Cost Dental Insurance

Thursday, Jan. 12th 2017 5:18 AM

Question: I am looking for a low cost dental insurance plan. I want to have the normal cleaning twice a year with X-rays. Since I feel I really only ever need preventive dental care, I do not want to have to spend $30-$50 a month for dental insurance for to get two free cleaning a year. Is there any dental insurance where it has a low monthly rate for people that are really only going to be using it twice a year?

Answer: What you may want to look into would be a dental HMO insurance plan. Generally HMO dental insurance plans offer a low monthly cost. HMO dental insurance plans are good over all dental plans and many do offer free office visits, X-rays, and dental cleaning’s. Make sure you read the policy terms to confirm plans coverage’s.

Dental Benefit, What Can Happen if Your Over Whiten Your Teeth

Tuesday, Jan. 10th 2017 6:59 AM

Why are My teeth translucent blue in color after whitening.

Over bleaching can lead to a permanent translucent blue appearance on the teeth. A cosmetic dentist can help correct this discoloration by applying veneers or a bonding agent to the teeth which can be an expensive dental procedure. Finally, the teeth can become more vulnerable to stains since the chemicals remove a protective layer on the teeth call the pellicle.

However did you know with most dental insurance plans preventive care such as cleaning’s, X-rays, and checks ups are little to no cost? Dental Benefit, What is Dental Erosion

Wednesday, Jan. 4th 2017 4:35 AM

Dental Erosion is When: The enamel (the hard, protective coating of the tooth) is worn away by exposure to acid, when that happens it leaves the sensitive dentine area of the tooth exposed. Dental erosion of the enamel can result in pain, particularly when consuming hot or cold food. The enamel on the tooth becomes softer and loses mineral content when we eat or drink anything acidic.

However, this acidity is canceled out by saliva, which slowly restores the natural balance within the mouth. But if the mouth is not given enough time to repair itself (because these acid attacks are happening too often) the surface of the teeth is worn away.

Dental Benefit, Hazards of Teeth Whitening

Friday, Dec. 30th 2016 6:21 AM

Can teeth whitening be harmful to the teeth and gums?

Teeth whitening can cause damage to the gums and teeth. Many over the counter whitening products and dentists use a hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide base solution to whiten teeth. When over used or used not as directed, these acidic chemicals can destroy the gums and enamel of the teeth. A tooth with a crack or cavity is more susceptible to damage and may even require a root canal.

Dental Benefit, Soda and fruit juice are ‘biggest culprits in dental erosion’

Wednesday, Dec. 28th 2016 6:19 AM

Soft drinks are the most significant factor in severity of dental erosion, according to a new study published in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry. Anything with a pH value (the measure of acidity) lower than 5.5 can damage the teeth. Diet and regular sodas, carbonated drinks, flavored fizzy waters, sports drinks, fruit and fruit juices are all known to be harmful to teeth if they are consumed too often.

If you are going to drink these types of drinks limit the contact they have on your teeth by drinking though a straw. Also think about substituting that type of drink out with water when ever possible. Water is not only good in the fact it causes no damage to your teeth but it also great for your body

What is an Annual Maximum Benefit?

Monday, Dec. 26th 2016 6:04 AM

Under most Dental PPO’s and Indemnity (free choice of provider plan) you will notice that they have an annual maximum benefit.  The maximum limitation per person per year normally ranges at around $500.00-$2000.00 depending on the plan you are reviewing.

But what is a maximum limitation? A maximum limitation is the dollar amount the insurance company is willing to spend per person per calendar year.  Such as: Say you have a $1000.00 maximum limitation for a three person family plan, that means each person has a maximum limitation of $1000.00 say from January 2016 to January 2017. Now say one person needs $4000.00 in dental work in a given year. If you do not want to go over your annual maximum benefit you want to make sure you schedule services at the end of one year and the being of next to help reduce your risk of going over your annual maximum benefit and being charged the differences. Please note this example is not taking into account any waiting period or deductible that may be applicable to this plan type specially within the first year of having the dental insurance plan.

Dental Benefit, Teeth Sensitive After Whitening

Saturday, Dec. 24th 2016 6:52 AM

Why are my teeth sensitive after using a teeth whitener?

You need to use extreme caution when using teeth whiteners. Over exposure to sensitive gums and teeth by the acids in the whitening agents eat into the gums and teeth. Sometimes this process may damage the teeth. The sensitivity is usually temporary, lasting only for a couple of days.
