Dental Benefit – Common Dental Issues

Friday, Dec. 8th 2023 9:14 AM

Everyone’s Teeth are Vulnerable to Common Dental Problems.

Dental problems are not uncommon, and everyone is vulnerable. Although with that said, you can also protect your oral health by sticking to a good oral hygiene routine. Proper oral hygiene is vital to help prevent common dental problems such as cavities. Brushing twice daily and flossing once daily reduces plaque on your teeth. Gum disease is the leading cause of adult tooth loss. Gum disease is caused by infection and inflammation of the gums. Gum disease is initially caused by plaque. Untreated plaque progresses into hardened tartar, and the plaque and tartar infect your gums. One way to help prevent gum disease is once again proper oral hygiene.

Dental Benefit – Pediatric Dental Care

Wednesday, Dec. 6th 2023 9:09 AM

Parents need to catch up on proper pediatric dental care.

According to a Metlife study, over half of the parents surveyed (60%) stated their kids eat sugary foods at least once daily. Parents should consider how often their children are eating sugary snacks, and if they cannot brush their child’s teeth after eating such a snack, to at least rinse with water. Eating sugary foods can cause damaging acids to form in the mouth, affecting teeth for at least 20 minutes before they are neutralized. Chewy sweets stick to the surface of the teeth, spending more time in the mouth and potentially causing more damage.

Gene Signature Predicts Oral Cancer Recurrence

New research published in BioMed Central’s open-access journal BMC Cancer shows that a four-gene signature may accurately predict which patients are at higher risk of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma recurrence. Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma is responsible for nearly a quarter of all head and neck cancers. It is one of the leading causes of cancer death. This was primarily due to the failure of current histological procedures to predict the disease’s recurrence.

Dental Benefit – Preventive Dental Care

Tuesday, Nov. 28th 2023 11:45 AM

Preventive dental care is essential for seniors.

Your teeth and gums age as you do. Even if you take excellent care of your teeth, chewing and cleaning will wear them down over time. Faster if you clench or grind your teeth. As you age, your teeth can start to look darker due to aging dentin. Older people may have more plaque buildup on their teeth. Though this is not necessary due to their age, age-related physical changes can make primary dental care, like brushing and flossing their teeth, harder to do. (Such as people who may have arthritis) Not only are your teeth aging, but your gums age too. Gums will naturally start to recede over time. If your gums recede to where the roots of your teeth are exposed, your teeth may become sensitive. As you age, your dentist may advise that you see them more often to maintain good preventive health care.

Dental Benefit – Fluoride

Friday, Nov. 24th 2023 11:33 AM

What you should know about Fluoride.

Fluoride is safe and effective in controlling tooth decay when used correctly. Too much of anything can be harmful, and the same with Fluoride. Children should use toothpaste with Fluoride; however, the young child should be supervised by an adult. Children under six are more likely to swallow toothpaste after brushing than spit it out. You want to ensure they only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste when brushing their teeth. Encourage your child to spit out and rinse as much as possible. Avoid flavored toothpaste with younger children as it may encourage swallowing or eating of the toothpaste.

Cosmetic Dentistry – Dental Benefit

Wednesday, Nov. 22nd 2023 11:09 AM

Thinking about Cosmetic Dentistry.

Within the last twenty years, dental materials and techniques have improved dramatically, allowing the average person to improve the appearance of their teeth. Demand for cosmetic dental procedures is more significant than ever. However, with that said, you should keep a few things in mind while making your decision.

Cosmetic dental services can be expensive. So much so that depending on the amount of work needed, you may want to start saving and budgeting in cost factors. For example, porcelain tooth veneers may cost $500 to $1,000 per tooth. Dental implants can cost as much as $1500 or more per tooth. Considering that most dental insurance plans do not cover cosmetic procedures, the cost is something to consider. Try and find a cosmetic dentist that will offer a free consult. Doing this allows you to get to know the dentist and what they may advise without committing to anything. Ask for referrals and check on the dentist’s experience and credentials.

Dental Benefit – Dental Sealants

Monday, Nov. 20th 2023 10:55 AM

Children Dental Care, Why have Dental Sealants.

There are times when a dentist will advise having dental sealants. Dental sealant is a clear plastic protective coating for teeth. Dental sealants are usually painted onto the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). Molars and premolars have grooves and crevices where food can get stuck. Some of these crevices can be deep enough that the bristles of a toothbrush can’t reach into them. Sealants can provide the perfect environment for bacteria to grow and cause cavities. Sealants will help prevent cavities from forming since they cover the groove so that food can not get into them. In the past, sealants were mainly used for children though adults can also get sealants when necessary.

Dental Benefit – Baby Teeth

Saturday, Nov. 18th 2023 9:14 AM

Baby teeth, why are they worth saving?

Many adults wonder why they should spend the high cost of saving their child’s baby tooth when they will fall out anyway. Although pulling a baby tooth may be less expensive if a dentist suggests doing a root canal and crown work to save the tooth, give some consideration and thought to what they are saying. There are good reasons you should keep a baby tooth compared to pulling a baby tooth too soon. Primary (baby) teeth serve several functions. Besides just letting your child chew, baby teeth are needed to learn how to speak correctly and play a role in the child’s physical appearance. Baby teeth are there to maintain the space required and to help the permanent teeth come in correctly. Pulling baby teeth too soon can make braces necessary for adult teeth Tooth decay in baby teeth can also affect the growth and envelopment of the permanent teeth. Damage to one can lead to damage to the other. This is why a dentist would want to treat and save any baby tooth whenever possible

Dental Benefit – Communicate with Your Dentist

Thursday, Nov. 16th 2023 1:50 PM

Communication is the key to receiving the best dental care.

1) Communicate with your dentist. The dentist will sometime talk in dental terms you may need help understanding. They assume if you are not asking any questions, it is because you understand what is being told to you. If your dentist is suggesting dental services that you need help understanding, ask questions until you do. If you are unsure why you need a suggested dental service, feel free to ask why.

2) If you speak a different languish, then you may want to bring someone with you who can help translate and make things more straightforward for you to understand.

3) When booking a dental appointment, let them know you may have questions for the dentist and for them to book in the added time necessary.

4) Keep your dentist in the loop. Many dentists will have you fill out a medical health form. You must complete it and be upfront about any medical conditions. Such as, if you have heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, the dentist needs to know this since gum care will be extra important to maintain.

5) If you have dental fears, let your dentist know ahead of time. That way, they can take the time needed to address your fears.
