Dental Care, Trying to whiten my teeth are hurting my gums

Wednesday, Oct. 20th 2010 9:52 AM

I am 19 but I been drinking coffee since I was only 13.  I have healthy teeth but worry about them not staying white with my coffee drinking.  A friend of my said I should start brushing with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda since this would not only whiten my teeth but keep them white.

I started doing what was suggested and it works really well but now in some areas my gum hurt at the teeth line.   Also my gums turn white for a short time but I was guessing that had to do with the hydrogen peroxide.  I do not know if I am brushing too hard or what.   Should I change to a softer toothbrush?

Listen STOP! I know many people who will say brushing with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda will make your teeth white. Maybe it does help to whiten your teeth, however over time it will also wear away your tooth enamel. And guess what…… you do not get tooth enamel back once it is gone it stay gone. If that happens you would need to get dental sealants in order to help protect your teeth from tooth decay.

The whiting of your gums is more then likely coming from the hydrogen peroxide. That is why when brushing with hydrogen peroxide your gums turn white for a short period of time. Think about it a little. if your gums are sore it may be because you are using too much hydrogen peroxide.

So give it a rest already. If I listed to all the stupid stuff my friends told me to do I may not be alive today.

Be smart talk things over with a dentist. Even if you do not want to have your teeth whiten by someone that would know what they are doing at least a dentist could advise you about some safe over the counter products that are meant to whiten your teeth.
